“PROBLEMS WITH THE FORM OF THE VERB”
 
Pada umumnya, pertanyaan written expression pada tes TOEFL, verb (kata kerja) dibentuk dengan tidak benar. Oleh karena itu, Anda sebaiknya memeriksa bentuk verb dengan cermat. Anda harus mengetahui bentuk-bentuk verb berikut ini: base form (Verb-1), present participle (Verb-ing), past (Verb-2), dan part participle (Verb-3). Berikut ini contoh masing-masing bentuk verb ketika digunakan pada teks:

Anda harus memerhatikan 3 permasalahan dengan penggunaan verb karena mereka paling umum, dan mudah untuk diperiksa: (1) periksa apa yang ada sesudah have, (2) periksa apa yang ada sesudah be, dan (3) periksa apa yang ada setelah will, would, atau modal lainnya.

Skill 30 After Have, Use The Past Participle (Setelah Have, Gunakan Past Participle (Verb-3))

 
Ketika Anda menemui helping verb (have) pada beberapa bentuknya (have, has, having, had), pastikan bahwa verb yang mengikutinya dalam bentuk past participle (Verb-3).
 
(a) They had walk* to school.
(b) We have see* the show.
(c) He has took* the test.
(d) Having ate*, he went to school
(e) She should have did* the work
(seharusnya had walked)
(seharusnya have seen)
(seharusnya has taken)
(seharusnya having eaten)
(seharusnya sould have done)
 
Selain itu, Anda harus memastikan bahwa jika Anda mempunyai subject dan past participle, Anda juga perlu verb “have”. Permasalahan ini umumnya dengan beberapa verb (seperti sing – sang – sung) yang berupaha dari present ke past ke past participle  degan hanya mengubah huruf vokalnya.

(b) He become* angry at his friend.
(c) The boat sunk* in the ocean.
(seharusnya sang atau has sung)
(seharusnya became atau has become)
(seharusnya sank atau has sunk)

Reduced Adverb Clause
Having + Past Participle (Verb-3)
 

EXERCISE 30

Each of the following sentences contains a verb in the past or a past participle. Underline the verb or past participles twice. Then indicate if the sentences are correct (C) or incorrect (I).

1.    The young girl drunk a glass of milk. (....)

2.    Before she left, she had asked her mother for permission. (....)

3.    Having finished the term paper, he began studying for the exam. (....)

4.    The secretary has broke her typewriter. (....)

5.    The installer should have completes the task more quickly. (....)

Skill 31 After Be, Use The Present Participle Or The Past Participle (Setelah Be, Gunakan Present Participle atau Past Participle)

 
Verb be pada beberapa bentuknya (am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being) dapat diikuti oleh verb lainnya. Verb yang mengikuti tersebut dapat berupa present participle (verb-ing) atau past participle (verb-3).
 
(a) We are do* our homework.
(b) The homework was do* early.
(c) Tom is take* the book.
(d) The book was take* by Tom.
(seharusnya are doing)
(seharusnya was done)
(seharusnya is taking)
(seharusnya was taken)

Continuous Tense
Be + Present Participle (Verb-ing)
Passive Form
Be + Past Participle (Verb-3)
*Be memiliki beberapa bentuk dan fungsi sesuai dengan jenis tense yang digunakan atau struktur kalimat, seperti am, is, are, was, were, be, been, atau being.

Each of the following sentences contains a verb in be. Underline the verb twice. Then indicate if the sentences are correct (C) or incorrect (I).

Skill 32 After Will, Would, Or Other Modals, Use The Base Form Of The Verb (Setelah Will, Would, atau Modal lainnya, Gunakan Base Form of Verb (Verb-1))

 
Ketika Anda menemui modal, seperti will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might, atau must, Anda harus partikan bahwa verb yang mengikutinya merupakan base form (verb-1).
 
(a) The boat will leaving* at 3:00. 
(b) The doctor may arrives* soon.
(c) The students must taken* the exam.

*Modal dapat dibedakan menjadi 2 yaitu:
(a) Simple modal (modal yang terdiri dari satu kata), seperti will, would, shall, should, can, could, may, might, dan must.
(b) Phrasal modal (modal yang terdiri dari dua kata atau lebih), seperti be able to, be supposed to, be going to, ought to, dan lain-lain.
