“PROBLEMS WITH NOUNS”

 

    Tipe permasalahan yang sama pada noun (kata benda) seringkali muncul pada bagian written expression pada tes TOEFL. Anda harus terbiasa dengan permasalah-permasalahan tersebut sehingga Anda akan dengan mudah memahami mereka. Anda harus mampu melakukan hal berikut: (1) menggunakan singular noun (kata benda tungal) atau plural noun (kata benda jamak) dengan benar, (2) membedakan countable noun (kata benda yang dapat dihitung) dan uncountable noun (kata benda yang tidak dapat dihitung), (3) mengenali irregular singular noun (kata benda tunggal tidak beraturan) dan plural noun (kata benda jamak tidak beraturan), and (4) membedakan kata benda orang dari benda.

  Dalam bahasa Inggris, noun (kata benda) diklasifikasikan menjadi countable dan uncountable noun. Pada beberapa pertanyaan tertentu dalam tes TOEFL, perlu membedakan countable dan uncountable nouns untuk menggunakan modifiers yang sesuai.

    Countable nouns merupakan kata benda yang dapat dihitung dalam kuantitas atau jumlah, seperti satu, dua, seratus, dan sebagainya. kata benda “book” merupakan countable karena Anda dapat memiliki satu atau beberapa buku. Sedangkan, uncountable nouns merupakan kata benda tidak dapat dihitung karena jumlahnya yang tidak pasti atau masif (banyak). Kata benda “sugar” atau “happiness” tidak dapat dihitung; Anda tidak dapat memiliki satu gula atau dua kebahagiaan. Uncountable nouns seringkali merupakan liquid items (benda cair), seperti water, oil, atau shampoo. Uncountable nouns juga bisa merujuk pada abstract ideas (ide abstrak), seperti security, friendship, atau hope.

    Penting bagi Anda untuk mengenali perbedaan antara countable and uncountable nouns ketika terdapat kata-kata kunci seperti much dan many.

(a) He has seen much* foreign films.

(b) He didn’t have many* fun at the movies.

 

    Pada contoh kalimat (a), penggunaan kata “much” salah karena films termasuk countable noun. Kalimat ini seharunya “manyforeign films”. Sedangkan, pada contoh kalimat (b), penggunaan kata “many” salah karena fun termasuk uncountable noun. Kalimat ini seharusnya “much fun”.

Each of the following sentences contains at least one keyword to tell you if a noun should be countable or uncountable noun. Underline the keywords. Bold the nouns they describe. Then, indicate if the sentences are correct (C) or incorrect (I). 

1.    He received little notice that the bill would have to be paid in full. (.....)

2.    The police had few opportunities to catch the thief who had committed a large amount of crimes. (.....)

3.    You will have fewer problems with your income taxes if you get professional help. (.....)

4.    After the strike, the company dismissed many employees. (.....)

6.    Since he bought the new adapter, he has had less trouble with the machine. (.....)

9.    A few soldiers who had been in heavy combat were brought back for a little rest. (.....)

10. It is better to go shopping in the late evening because there are less people in the market, and you can accomplish a number of tasks in a short period of time. (.....)

 

Key Answer

1.    He received little notice that the bill would have to be paid in full. (C) >> notice merupakan uncountable noun.

2.    The police had few opportunitiesto catch the thief who had committed a large amount of crimes. (I) >> Opportunity bisa dikategorikan countable atau uncountable noun, crime merupakan uncountable noun. Pada kalimat ini few sebaiknya diganti dengan little.

3.    You will have fewer problems with your income taxes if you get professional help. (C) >> problems merupakan countable noun.

4.    After the strike, the company dismissed many employees. (C) >> employee merupakan countable noun.
